Keep the Fire Burning: How Leaders Stay Motivated While Motivating Others - Louise Bedeman - GM: Training, Learning & Performance

Leaders are the engines that drive teams forward. They set the vision, inspire action, and celebrate successes. But what about the leader‘s own motivation? Can the constant act of motivating others leave a leader feeling drained? Absolutely. The good news is, motivated leaders create motivated teams, so prioritizing your own energy is crucial. Here‘s how leaders can stay fired up:

1. Find Your Why: Leaders with a strong sense of purpose radiate passion. What drives you? Is it innovation, making a difference, or building a strong team?  Reconnecting with your core values can reignite the spark that motivates you to motivate others.

2. Celebrate Small Wins: The road to success is paved with milestones. Don‘t wait for the big win to celebrate. Acknowledge and celebrate small victories with your team. This reinforces positive momentum and keeps everyone, including yourself, energized.

3. Prioritize Self-Care: You can‘t pour from an empty cup. Leaders need to prioritize self-care. Schedule time for activities that recharge you, whether it‘s exercise, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones. A refreshed leader is a more effective leader.

4. Delegate and Empower: Micromanagement is a surefire way to drain your energy. Delegate tasks effectively and empower your team members to take ownership. This not only frees up your time but also fosters a sense of responsibility and motivation within the team.

5. Learn and Grow: Leaders who stagnate lose their edge.  Challenge yourself by learning new skills, attending workshops, or reading industry publications. Staying at the forefront keeps your work interesting and fuels your passion for leading the way.

6. Build Your Support System: No leader is an island. Surround yourself with positive and inspiring people, mentors who offer guidance, and colleagues who understand the challenges of leadership. Sharing experiences and seeking advice can be a huge motivator.

7. Recognize and Reward Others: Appreciation is a powerful motivator.  Recognize and reward your team members‘ achievements.  This positive reinforcement not only energizes them but also fuels your own sense of accomplishment as a leader who fosters a successful team.

8. Focus on the Positive: Challenges are inevitable but dwelling on negativity saps energy.  Develop a solutions-oriented mindset. Focus on what can be controlled and actively work towards overcoming obstacles.

By following these tips, leaders can ensure they stay motivated and energised, creating a ripple effect that inspires and motivates their teams. Remember, a leader who takes care of themselves is better equipped to take care of their team, leading to a thriving and successful work environment.
