10 Tips on Managing the Human Side of Change in Projects (Bahia Sarlie & Karin Deacon – Human Beings who work, laugh and play at PM.Ideas)

  1. Build a compelling case for the project; in other words, the change.
  2. Send consistent messages in terms of the commitment to the change – Walk the Talk!
  3. As much as process and governance is important on projects, the people side in terms of adopting the change is more important.
  4. Actively listen to people’s concerns and don’t downplay or ignore the human pain of change.
  5. Engage affected stakeholders and keep them involved.
  6. Effective change management is not someone else’s “problem”. Train Executives and Senior Managers on what is required of an effective Sponsor.
  7. Accept that people’s reactions are going to be different to change based on where they are at that point in time and let’s not forget they have day jobs.
  8. Communicate the change passionately, unambiguously, and to the point continuously.
  9. Use humour – it helps!
  10. Make people change management an integral part of every project you run.
