Project managers, your role in Strategic Planning, Analysis, and Alignment is not just important, it‘s pivotal. These competencies involve understanding an organization‘s long-term goals and ensuring that projects are chosen, planned, and executed in accordance with these goals. Your active involvement is not just beneficial but crucial to the success of these processes.

  • Strategic Planning: This involves setting priorities, focusing energy and resources, strengthening operations, and ensuring that employees and other stakeholders work toward common goals. It is the process that establishes agreement around intended outcomes/results and assesses and adjusts the organisation‘s direction in response to a changing environment.
  • Strategic Analysis: This is a critical process that involves researching and understanding the business environment, both internal and external, and using this information to inform strategic decisions. It includes SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), PESTLE analysis (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental), and other frameworks.
  • Strategic Alignment: Ensuring that the projects and initiatives undertaken are directly aligned with the organisation‘s strategic goals. It means linking the organisation‘s structure and resources with its strategy and environment.

Incorporating Strategic Planning, Analysis, and Alignment into project management is not just beneficial, it‘s a necessity. It ensures that:
